The world’s largest injection machine equipped for the MuCell microcellular foam molding process (above) was started up in December at the technical center of Mürdter, a German molder and moldmaker in Mutlangen. The KraussMaffei MC 5400-17200 press has a clamping force of 5400 metric tons (5940 tons U.S.). It allows direct comparison of large parts, such as auto instrument panels, produced by solid injection and microcellular physical foaming with gas injection. The MuCell process is licensed by Trexel Inc., Wilmington, Mass. Only recently has the process expanded into high-tonnage molding (see December 2011 Starting Up).
